Organic germanium consists of a ring of 6 germanium atoms, tightly surrounded by 12 oxygen atoms.

The germanium acts like a glue that holds the 12 oxygen atoms together in a very small space, but does not react with the organism itself.

This oxygen bound by the germanium is not released into the organism, but primarily serves as a radical scavenger for H+ ions.
