Organic germanium consists of a ring of 6 germanium atoms, tightly surrounded by 12 oxygen atoms.

The germanium acts like a glue that holds the 12 oxygen atoms together in a very small space, but does not react with the organism itself.

This oxygen bound by the germanium is not released into the organism, but primarily serves as a radical scavenger for H+ ions.

Food is burned by the body, producing carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2). The carbon dioxide finds its way out of the body through exhalation through the lungs. Hydrogen, on the other hand, combines with inhaled oxygen to form water and is excreted through the kidneys and skin.
